Ireland Pharma and Health Trends: October 2026 edition

By Airmid Éireann, Priya Life Science Data release 1.3.0, Edition DOI: assigned on publication
In shortThis edition reports 30 indicators on Irish and European pharma and health data, computed by code from 23 open Airmid Éireann datasets. Each figure carries its own reference period. Pharmaceutical exports were EUR 5,971 million in August 2026, 7.9% below August 2025. 692,524 people were waiting for a first outpatient appointment in September 2026, 10.5% more than a year earlier.

Human medicines first authorised in Ireland (HPRA register)
Products on the HPRA human medicines register whose authorised_date falls in the month. The register lists products authorised now (or with transfer pending), so products later withdrawn drop out of earlier months.
Note: Survivorship: the register is a current list, so counts for past months can fall as products are withdrawn.
Note: The HPRA can add products to the register some weeks after authorisation; the latest month can rise in later editions.
Provisional: The HPRA can add products to the register some weeks after authorisation, so the latest month can rise in later editions.

Projections

Statistical projection based on past patterns. Not a prediction of events and not advice.

A series gets a projection only when its model passed every test below in rolling-origin backtests: the model is refitted at 12 past cut-off points, projects 6 months ahead each time, and is scored against what the data then showed.

  • Error (MASE) below 1, and at least 5% lower than the better of two simple benchmarks: seasonal naive (same month last year) and naive (last month).
  • The 80% band contained at least 65% of the backtest outcomes.
  • At least 36 complete months of history, and for counts an average of at least 10 events a month.

Bands show 80% and 95% intervals. Models tried: SeasonalNaive, Naive, AutoETS, AutoARIMA, AutoTheta, Combination. Equal-weight mean of AutoETS, AutoARIMA and AutoTheta; its intervals are the average of the three component intervals.

Accuracy log

No projection has been scored yet. This is the first edition with projections. In later editions, each published projection will be compared with the figures as they then appear in the data, and the error will be listed here next to the month it refers to. Projections that miss will stay on this list.

Methods

  • Computed by code. Figures come from airmed tools/monthly_trends.py version 1.0.0 with the definitions file trends_indicators.json version 1.0.0. Each indicator has a fixed definition, unit, dataset, date field, filter and aggregation, listed with its figures in the downloads.
  • Reference periods. Each indicator uses its own latest complete period ending before the edition month. Publication lags are stated as flags.
  • Complete months only. Period datasets only: a month is complete when the number of distinct key values reaches min_ratio x the highest number seen in the previous 12 months. Months to step back from the last month that ended before collection, because the publisher adds records for a month some time after it ends.
  • Changes. Month-on-month and year-on-year, only when both periods are complete; percentage changes withheld below min_n; shares change in percentage points.
  • Small counts. If the count behind a figure, or behind a comparison period, is below min_n, percentage changes are not given and the indicator is flagged small_n.
  • Describe, not explain. Figures describe the data; no causes, predictions or medical advice.
  • Windows and aggregation. 1 = the reference month alone; 12 = the 12 months ending with the reference month (all 12 must be complete). Count = rows; count_distinct = distinct values of keys; sum = sum of a numeric field; share = 100 x numerator / denominator, where the numerator is the denominator rows that also pass numerator_filter; value = the single published value of each period.
  • Projections. Module version 1.0.0, libraries python 3.12.10, numpy 2.5.2, pandas 2.3.3, scipy 1.18.1, statsforecast 2.1.1. MASE is scaled by in-sample seasonal naive (lag 12) MAE of each backtest training window. Intervals and medians are floored at zero (all series are non-negative).

Limitations

  • Revisions. Figures flagged provisional (trade, production, trials, CORDIS projects and publications among them) change in later releases. This edition uses one release, so it cannot measure revision size.
  • Registers are snapshots. The HPRA register lists current products, so withdrawn products drop out of earlier months, and the latest month can rise when products are added late.
  • Narrow definitions. The modern sector index is wider than pharmaceuticals. EMA shortages are the shortages EMA lists for the EU, not Irish national shortages. NTPF totals count a person once per list. Member states' export totals include trade between member states.
  • Gaps. Airmid has no Irish national shortage data and no monthly Irish prescribing data. The annual GMS prescribing indicators are held from this edition while their published unit labels are confirmed.
  • One-off base months. Some year-on-year changes, such as FDA warning letters and the modern sector production index, compare with unusually high months in their series. The charts show this.
  • Trial projections. The trial-start projections cover months whose registrations are still arriving, so their outcomes keep rising in later snapshots.
