The comprehensive resource demonstrates how pharmaceutical companies invest in research and development (R&D), partner with the National Health Service (NHS), support high-skilled employment, and drive regional economic growth far beyond traditional life sciences clusters.

From an Irish perspective, the findings published in the 2026 map hold immense relevance. Ireland and the UK share one of the most interconnected biopharmaceutical supply chains in the world. As both nations navigate global trade shifts, supply chain disruptions, and regulatory evolutions, the data underscores the joint economic resilience generated by cross-border pharmaceutical manufacturing, clinical research networks, and trade corridors across the Irish Sea.

Headline National Findings from the 2026 Impact Map

The updated ABPI Impact Map aggregates public datasets-including figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and clinical trial registries-to outline the full scale of the UK pharmaceutical ecosystem. Headline metrics from the 2026 launch include:

  • High-Skilled Employment: 125,702 people are directly employed in pharmaceutical manufacturing or research and development across the UK.
  • Economic Gross Value Added (GVA): The industry generates an average annual GVA contribution of £20.4 billion to the economy, reflecting exceptional labor productivity.
  • NHS-Industry Collaborations: There are currently 3,658 active formal partnerships between pharmaceutical companies and NHS trusts, accelerating clinical research and patient care delivery.
  • Physical Infrastructure Footprint: The sector supports 186 specialized manufacturing facilities and 646 dedicated R&D sites nationwide.

Regional Footprint Across the Four Nations

A key objective of the 2026 Impact Map is demonstrating that life science investments are deeply rooted in local communities throughout all four UK nations, rather than being confined exclusively to the "Golden Triangle" of London, Oxford, and Cambridge:

England

England remains the primary manufacturing and clinical trial hub, supporting 110,774 jobs across 552 research sites and 155 manufacturing plants. Regional clusters in the North West and East of England drive significant export volumes of biologics and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).

Scotland

Scotland’s life sciences footprint accounts for 5,900 high-value jobs spread across 63 research sites and 13 manufacturing plants. Scottish facilities specialize in advanced cell and gene therapy manufacturing, clinical trial logistics, and industrial biotechnology.

Wales

The pharmaceutical sector in Wales supports 4,778 skilled employees, operating across 22 research sites and 14 manufacturing facilities. Welsh sites are increasingly focused on medical technology integration, diagnostics, and specialized packaging.

Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland supports 4,250 life science jobs across 9 research facilities and 4 major manufacturing sites. Crucially, Northern Ireland serves as a vital geographic and regulatory bridge between the UK internal market and the European Union, facilitating seamless cross-border trade with Ireland.

"Our industry is making a tangible difference in every part of the country-supporting high-value jobs, investing in cutting-edge research, partnering with health services, and ensuring patients access the medicines they need," stated Joe Edwards, Executive Director of UK Competitiveness and Devolved Nations at the ABPI. "This updated map brings that contribution to life, showing how companies are rooted in local communities across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland."

Cross-Border Supply Chain Synergies with Ireland

When examined alongside Ireland’s biopharmaceutical footprint, the data illustrates an exceptionally integrated transatlantic and European supply corridor. According to recent 2026 figures from the Irish Pharmaceutical Healthcare Association (IPHA) and Goodbody, Ireland’s biopharma sector employs over 75,000 professionals directly and indirectly, generating €139 billion in exports in 2025.

Ireland hosts one of the highest densities of commercial-scale biomanufacturing plants in the world, including 9 of the top 10 global biopharma companies. However, Ireland and the UK rely heavily on each other for intermediate processing, clinical batch testing, secondary packaging, and distribution. Active ingredients synthesized in Cork or Dublin are frequently shipped to facilities in North West England or Scotland for finished dosage formulation, before being distributed back into the Irish NHS and HSE supply chains.

Building Resilient Supply Networks and Mitigating Risk

The release of the ABPI Impact Map comes at a time when pharmaceutical supply chain resilience is a chief priority for healthcare leaders. Global freight bottlenecks and geopolitical tensions have heightened the necessity for localized, resilient supply networks. The ABPI's 2026 resilience framework advocates for robust early-warning systems to detect medicine shortages and calls for streamlined customs protocols between the UK and EU member states.
