Generic Human & Veterinary Pharmaceuticals + Contract Manufacturing
Ireland's largest indigenous manufacturer of generic pharmaceuticals for both human and veterinary use. Founded in 1985 by Michael H. Burke in Loughrea, Co. Galway, the company grew over almost four decades into a group holding 1,200+ human and 3,000+ animal health licenses, the largest veterinary licence portfolio of any animal health company in the EU, exporting to 90-100 countries worldwide. Operations run across two divisions: Human Health, manufacturing generic prescription and OTC medicines, and Animal Health, established in the UK market since 1991 with 50+ active brands across trade, veterinary and pet retail channels. The Loughrea campus itself has grown with the business, with a 2021 conversion adding a further 35,000 sq ft manufacturing facility at Ballinasloe, alongside the original site's multiple production buildings and R&D laboratories. Beyond its own generics portfolio, Chanelle offers contract development, manufacturing and packaging services to other human and animal health companies, backed by HPRA licensing and an FDA-approved manufacturing line (Spot On, operational since September 2019). In February 2024, founder Michael H. Burke sold the company to UK private equity firm Exponent for an estimated €300 million and retired. Angelo Gatto was appointed CEO that August, bringing 25 years of pharmaceutical leadership experience from Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, Aenova Group and Adragos Pharma to lead the next phase of growth.
