In a major shift for the UK pharmaceutical supply chain, Eli Lilly has officially launched its highly successful LillyDirect sales channel across the United Kingdom. Originally designed as a direct-to-patient (DTP) service in the United States, the platform has become a primary driver of sales for the company’s blockbuster weight-loss and metabolic therapies. Now, UK patients will have access to a carefully adapted version of this service.
Navigating UK Regulations
Directly transferring the US model to the UK was a regulatory impossibility. Unlike in the US, UK law strictly prohibits drug manufacturers from shipping prescription-only medications directly to patients. To navigate this, the UK iteration of LillyDirect has been engineered as a post-prescription dispensing and delivery network.
Instead of acting as a direct vendor, LillyDirect will function through a network of regulated private healthcare organizations. Once an eligible private clinic is registered with the service, it can issue private electronic prescriptions. These prescriptions are then seamlessly processed and fulfilled by Lilly's designated dispensing partners-currently Blueco Healthcare's Onescript service and Pharmacy2U.
The medications are delivered directly to the patient's home in secure, discreet packaging, complete with real-time delivery tracking. The company was careful to clarify its boundaries within this new system, stating: "Lilly plays no role in any clinical decisions relating to patient care."
Combating the Counterfeit Crisis with Mounjaro
The first medication to be offered through the UK LillyDirect channel is the highly sought-after injectable GIP/GLP-1 agonist Mounjaro (tirzepatide). While approved for both weight loss and the treatment of type 2 diabetes, NHS eligibility restrictions have made it difficult for many patients to access the drug through public healthcare channels.
This access bottleneck has driven a massive surge in private prescriptions. Unfortunately, this demand has also created a lucrative black market. Patients seeking Mounjaro outside traditional channels have been increasingly exposed to falsified copies. Internationally, these counterfeit pens have been found to lack any active ingredient or, far more dangerously, contain entirely different drugs such as insulin.
LillyDirect serves as a powerful countermeasure to this growing threat. By controlling the post-prescription fulfillment process, the company ensures that patients receive only authentic, quality-controlled products. "This service helps to safeguard against the risk of counterfeit products entering the supply chain," the company noted.
Future Expansions and a 150-Year Legacy
Looking ahead, Eli Lilly plans to expand the roster of medications available through the UK service. A prime candidate is the oral GLP-1 agonist Foundayo (orforglipron), which is currently under review by the MHRA and could be greenlit for private prescription by the end of the year.
The launch of this service coincides with a major milestone for the pharmaceutical giant. Khalil Asmar, Vice President of Cardiometabolic Health at Lilly UK & Northern Europe, reflected on the moment: "This year marks 150 years since the founding of Eli Lilly and Company. For a century and a half, our founding purpose – to make life better for patients – has driven every innovation we have pursued."
"The launch of LillyDirect in the UK is a continuation of that legacy: using the tools and technologies available today to better serve patients tomorrow," Asmar added. "We are committed to ensuring that once a patient has been prescribed a Lilly medicine, receiving it is as simple, secure, and straightforward as possible."
