PPD became part of Thermo Fisher Scientific following a $17.4 billion acquisition completed in December 2021. Its Athlone, Co. Westmeath facility is a GMP laboratory providing analytical testing for clinical and marketed products across the EMEA region, expanded to add cell and gene therapy testing capacity. A January 2024 restructuring closed a supply depot at the site (around 100 roles), but Thermo Fisher stated the GMP laboratory itself was unaffected and it remains committed to the site's growth.
